About the artist
Henry Tian ( b. 1992) is a Chinese-Canadian self-taught figurative artist based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Henry discovered the magical world of fine art in 2016, during his education to become a physiotherapist. He was deeply fascinated by artist Richard Schmid's book "Alla Prima - Everything I Know about Painting", and he started learning and practicing art as a hobby in his spare time. With the help of art books and the Internet, Henry soon grasped the utmost important principles of creating art, and he has been continuously developing his skills as he absorbs the knowledge. His methodology of learning is simply to "learn, practice, reflect, repeat", and he finds great joy and satisfaction from the process. He hopes to blend his unique vision and experience of the world with the classical techniques and pursuit for excellence passed down from the masters of figurative art, such as Rembrandt, John Singer Sargent, Anders Zorn, Richard Schmid, Jeremy Lipking, and many more. His art focuses on the beauty and elegance of the world that genuinely touches him, and he feels blessed that he is able to share his personal experience of the world with a visual language that is universal to all humankind.
Henry is also very keen on sharing the knowledge he has compiled. He believes that anything can be explained in very simple terms if it is truly understood. He likes to challenge himself by presenting the fundamental ideas of art in short videos while demonstrating them with easy-to-understand steps and examples. He has a Youtube channel called "Decompress Art" dedicated to this purpose. He hopes to demystify the notion that "art is an innate talent" or "art is difficult" by showing people the brutally simple ideas and skills that anyone can learn to improve their artwork.
Henry is currently working as a physiotherapist while pursuing his art endeavour. He is passionate about both worlds and he is curious to see how everything will unfold from here.
